Who It’s For

Built for the moments
you hope never come.

We’ve worked with young women heading off to college, real-estate professionals concerned about open houses, teachers doing home visits, and sorority and service groups across campus, plus small groups of individuals who simply want to feel more capable.

These workshops are offered every other month, and we can arrange them on demand for a small group. The reason is simple: we care, and we’ve put real time into refining this program.

The Workshop

Taught in three or four parts.
Three hours each.

Practical, respectful, and built for smaller frames. Awareness first, technique always.

Part 1 · From the Feet

Stand-up fundamentals

Striking techniques that make sense for smaller frames, basic grappling concepts for escapes, and the most effective targets for stopping a threat. We cover personal-protection tools like pepper spray, knives, stun guns, and firearms. Above all, we teach the mindset and awareness that keep you prepared.

Part 2 · Feet to the Ground & Back Up

When it goes to the floor

Building on Part 1, we focus on defending, escaping, and getting back to your feet. These are the situations that matter most in a real assault, drilled until they feel natural.

Part 3 · Kitty Has Claws

Tools as the great equalizer

Accessing and deploying a tool under stress is a skill in itself. This session shows how the right tool turns the predator into the prey and gives a smaller person a real physical advantage to stop a threat.

Part 4 · Firearms-Specific Training

Carry and use

An optional session on the carry and use of firearms for self-defense, supplementing Parts 1–3. Live-fire exercises are available by request.

Black Cat is an excellent gym with an unrivaled culture! I have attended classes since the day the gym opened and I have always felt I have a fun and safe place to learn and grow in martial arts and as a person. Josh is a fantastic teacher, mentor, and friend to his students. He is very knowledgeable and explains concepts in a way that can be easily understood by all. If you’re thinking about getting into martial arts, look no further!

Solid place to train. Best MMA gym in Morgantown. All the coaches have a lot of knowledge in their respective sports. The owner, Josh Fowler, has always been one of the most knowledgeable martial artists I know. He’s also pretty quick with a joke. Definitely stop in Black Cat MMA if you’re wanting to get into shape, start a new hobby, learn to defend yourself, or want to compete. They offer MMA, kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kali, and wrestling classes.

THE BEST. This place trains at a national level. Josh taught me basically everything I know about self-defense and BJJ. It gave me a huge advantage in belting up when I hit the fleet in the military. I took my wife to see him as well and she learned a lot and loved it! Bottom line: they know their stuff, really, and it is presented highly effectively.

Myself and my 5 sons have been training here for the past three months. We’ve had a great time taking MMA classes. My kids look forward to learning something new each time we go. Josh has been an excellent coach and has even been able to maintain the attention of my two youngest for almost a full hour — which is an amazing achievement in itself. We look forward to being long-time students and expanding our skills.

Our daughter had a great time in the Kittens class. Coach Josh is amazing with the kids. His patience is top tier, from a small class to a large one. She picked up some great skills while being in his class that are now being applied in a school setting.
